La Grave
La Grave is a legendary resort and freeriding heaven for expert skiers. The skiing is all rugged off piste based on the glacial slopes of the mighty Meije.
It is home to some of the most demanding and challenging off piste skiing in the world with a vertical drop of 2200m. La Grave is how mountains used to be: there’s not many lifts, no crowds, no pistes and no ski patrols.
If you go to La Grave you’ll need guide, although in good weather many people go without. The unspoiled mountain village of La Grave is a little drab and has a busy main road running through it, but it has some welcoming hotels and the prices are reasonable.
Pros
- It’s a legendary off piste mountain which is usually crowd free.
- Excellent snow conditions.
- There is easy access by car to other neighbouring resorts and it is linked to Les Deux Alpes.
Cons
- The ski area is only suitable to experts and inclement weather will close the lifts.
- The village gets a lot of though traffic and there is nothing to do once you get off the slopes.
